Teaching remains a priority for Dr Hayward. Carlston and Brian Reed, appeared in 2020. A special issue of Modernist Cultures, titled ‘Modernism in Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand and the Pacific Islands’ and coedited with Erin M. The collection New Oceania: Modernisms and Modernities in the Pacific, coedited with Maebh Long, was published by Routledge in 2019, and Hayward and Long are working on the co-authored monograph, Oceanian Modernism. This research began with the aim of improving his teaching of regional material, but has in recent years taken on a life of its own. Since moving to USP, he has also developed an interest in Pacific literature, especially in relation to modernism.

Mistakenly excluded from Joyce’s genetic corpus, these notebooks offer an important archive for understanding Joyce’s representation of advertising, insurance, shipping, the stock exchange, and many other modern business practices in Ulysses. He specialises in James Joyce studies, particularly in relation to consumer culture, and is currently working on the monograph Joyce in Business, a study of Joyce’s so-called ‘Notes on Business and Commerce’.
